Another day, another unmissable treat from the SIT Select Festival. Selected at Newark Park opens on Wednesday 23rd April and brings 30 talented and extraordinary craft-makers to this former Tudor Hunting Lodge and its beautiful gardens.

The work on show ranges from textiles and paintings to ceramics and etched glass and has been made by leading and emerging makers from the region (some of whom can also be seen on the Select Trail http://www.sitselect.org/sitselecttrail.html) and beyond. Five of them were chosen by SIT patrons Mary La Trobe Bateman (animated sculpture by Eleanor Glover), Linda Brassington (woven textiles by Sue Hartrey), Simon Olding (etched glass by Ruth Dresman), Margaret Benton (porcelain sculpture by Katharine Morling) and Jilly Edwards, who has nominated carved wood artists Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling. ‘I have followed Martin and Dowling since we all took part in the Chelsea Crafts Fair in 1997,’ she says, ‘and I chose them for this exhibition because I felt that their work met so much of the ethos of Newark Park and will sit so well around the house. Martin & Dowling’s work is all about partnership, with their material and their thoughts. They show wood to be amazingly versatile whether in their monumental works or their new delicate slivers which are stitched. I am honoured that they want to be my nominees.’

Seven artists – Caroline Bartlett, Jilly Cobbe, Susan Early, Caren Garfen, Joe Lovelock, Penny Prince and Tara & Bart with Miniature Museum – have created site responsive pieces directly inspired by the history of this extraordinary house and its surrounding landscape.

Finally, we are also delighted to announce the launch of a new prize, the Hartlebury Fund which will be awarded to one of the artists on show at Newark Park. Awards provide vitally important recognition and financial support to artists and we are thrilled that SIT is able to offer the Hartlebury Fund for the next three years.
