I have spent this sunny day in London looking at an exhibition of paintings by Peter Joseph. Joseph works from a studio perched on a hillside near Stroud and anyone lucky enough to be familiar with this area will find that his collection of new work is filled with the weather and light of the Gloucestershire valleys.
In the (beautiful) catalogue which accompanies the exhibition, Joseph is quoted as saying ‘A painting must generate feeling otherwise it is dead.’ By that token, these are the most vividly alive paintings I have come across in a long time. Joyous.
Peter Joseph The New Painting is at the Lisson Gallery, 27 Bell St, London NW1 until 10th May. 020 7724 2739; www.lissongallery.com
